TIERRA NEGRA, 2025
On Tenerife, much of the island’s landscape is made of basalt lava from past volcanic eruptions. While the rock is rich in minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium, and potassium, these nutrients are initially locked within the solid stone.
Over decades and centuries, weathering processes, rain, wind, and the activity of lichens and microbes slowly break down the lava, turning it into fertile soil that can support plants and forests. In this way, Tenerife’s volcanic land slowly transformed from barren rock into a foundation for life.
